Laura Napier

Laura Napier graduated from Cooper Union with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1998 and also with a Masters in Fine Art degree in Photography from Bard College in 2007. Based in the Bronx, she is currently living in Houston working on an artistic research project about the social cultures of the petrochemical industries of Texas.

She fell in love with photography aged ten in the darkroom, while watching the image magically appear on photographic paper submerged in a tray of developer, during her first photo class at “College for Kids”, Southwestern Community College, in San Diego, California.

As an adult she taught photography with Continuing Education at the Cooper Union, and also worked in the New York photography industry for many years, printing for fine art, media, and commercial clients. She continues to document artwork for visual artists. Twenty of her architectural photographs are published in the book The Landmarks of New York, and she also has experience in studio, editorial, and fashion photography.

She loves to travel, and feels fortunate that through her art projects she has worked in Berlin, Germany; Flint, Michigan; Memphis, Tennessee; Miami, Florida; and New Delhi, India. She recently worked with a diverse group of artists originating from all over the world, while co-curating the exhibition Bronx Calling: The Third AIM Biennial, featuring seventy-two emerging artists at the Bronx Museum of the Arts.

She is an avid birdwatcher and loves kayaking. She is very excited to spend more time in Houston and the Gulf region, and to join the roster of instructors at the Houston Center for Photography.
