The photographers chosen for the Houston Center for Photography’s 31st Annual Member Exhibition represent a range of diverse methods and styles that reflect the broad practice of photography today. In selecting the pictures for this exhibition I was drawn to cohesive projects with a conceptual underpinning that tackle contemporary issues. From traditional documentary work to imaginative constructions the photographs display a curiosity on the part of the photographers to see the world in new ways. Some of the common threads include a desire to excavate historical events or understand current political and social affairs, to transform and elevate everyday moments, and to conjure scenes of magical realism. Because of Texas’ proximity to the border with Mexico many pictures deal with the issues raised by this geographical boundary. Other photographs take up the changing state of the medium itself, or the ways in which we attempt to understand the world through the lens.
Congratulations to Rachel Cox, Alma Leiva and Robin Myers for receiving the Beth Block Honorarium.
